Flash, bang, wallop - what a picture!

I mentioned Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras the other day.  Very much "Big Brother" stuff, but that seems to be the way things are going these days.  So it's a bit worrying (to say the least) to find that they are far from infallible.  Quite apart from deliberate attempts to fool them, a report by the official surveillance "tsar" suggests that something like 3% of their photographs could be "misreads" - a small percentage to be sure, but it represents about a million occurrences a day - each of which could result in an innocent driver receiving a summons, or being caught up in a police investigation.or some such.
